The hotel has announced it will be teaming up with a local expert to host its first ever wild swimming retreat experience at the coastal venue this summer.

The Pierhouse in Port Appin, situated on the picturesque shores of Loch Linnhe, is partnering with local open water coach and wild swim guide, Dan Coyle – also known as ‘Dan the Merman’ – to offer an immersive experience designed for wild swimmers of any level including beginners.

Taking place on Saturday 11th June just outside The Pierhouse, Dan will be leading a two-hour morning session of guided discovery of the pristine waters of Loch Linnhe, helping keen swimmers to develop skills, strategies and build confidence in the open water.

Both wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers are welcome, and with cosy robes and warm refreshments waiting within the venue, the swimming experience will end with recovery back on dry land, followed by a delicious lunch with bespoke menu created by The Pierhouse’s Head Chef Michael Leathley.

An STA open water swim coach and qualified RLSS lifesaver, Dan is based nearby to The Pierhouse in Argyll and offers acclaimed open water swim coaching and guided wild swimming experiences across the ‘adventure coast’ of Scotland.

The small hotel and renowned Scottish seafood restaurant in Port Appin has become one of the region’s most idyllic coastal destinations. Menus include the freshest langoustines and mussels harvested from Loch Linnhe and Loch Etive, as well as fine handpicked oysters from the oyster beds of Loch Creran.

Fiona McLean, General Manager of The Pierhouse, said: “We are so lucky to be such a fabulous coastal location which offers the perfect place to try out some wild swimming. With stunning surroundings, it is a lovely, sheltered bay to explore.

“We have explored the idea of creating an experience day for a while, and it was extremely important to us to have someone like Dan on board – a local expert who knows the west coast like the back of his hand and has extensive experience in leading retreats like this one.

“The Pierhouse team and I are so looking forward to hosting our first wild swimming experience and we will be waiting on dry land for our swimmers with warm drinks, delicious food and a cosy fire to huddle around.”

Dan added: “I'm really excited to be collaborating with such an esteemed establishment in the Pierhouse Hotel. It’s such a majestic setting and gloriously placed to combine fantastic wild swimming opportunities with exquisite local fayre to savour. I love nothing more than empowering individuals to thrive as wild swimmers and explore the stunning waters of our ‘adventure coast’ safely.”

Priced at £75 per person, the wild swimming experience at The Pierhouse can be booked by contacting the venue on 01631 730302 or email

Founded by Scots-born international hotelier, Gordon Campbell Gray, The Pierhouse is part of the Wee Hotel Company, a portfolio of intimate coastal venues which also includes the world-famous Three Chimneys restaurant with rooms on the Isle of Skye.

On overnight stay The Pierhouse starts from £195 per couple, per night, on a bed and breakfast basis.
