Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has reported a sharp rise in last-minute bookings, with reservations for the next seven days accounting for more than half (52%) of revenue in July.

New data released by the leading hotel group also revealed that 25% of bookings made since Monday 25 July are for stays this week, a significant increase from the typical 8% figure usually seen this time of year.

This pattern of ‘eleventh hour’ reservations has been reported across the group’s portfolio of hotels and resorts throughout the UK, with rural destinations such as Macdonald Aviemore Hotel, Leeming House Hotel and Old England Hotel & Spa in the Lake District, as well as bustling towns such as Windsor remaining particularly popular amongst those seeking a last-minute staycation.

Last-minute bookings represent a significant increase in business for Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, compared to a pre-pandemic statistic of under 25% at this time of year, highlighting the wide scale impact of the continued chaos across Britain’s airports this summer.

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts incorporates four and five-star hotels and self-catering resorts across the UK and Spain. Each of the group’s 34 hotels and nine resorts has its own unique style, full of individual charm and authentic local character.

To underline the surge in last-minute bookings, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts have announced a summer flash sale, with an additional 10% off all existing summer rates at select venues until Sunday (31 July) only.

A Macdonald Hotels & Resorts spokesperson said:

“This was due to be the summer of freedom and travel following long periods of restrictions and lockdowns, but the ongoing air travel disruption globally has definitely been a factor in people’s travel plans this year.

“While travelling abroad is still a highlight of the summer calendar for many, we’ve noticed a real surge in last-minute bookings for UK breaks, or staycations, this summer.

“We’re proud to help our guests explore all the UK has to offer this season, and we look forward to welcoming more visitors via our summer flash sale.”
