For the first time in its 96-year history, iconic sporting and country estate, Gleneagles, is expanding its brand beyond the Perthshire hills to open a vibrant new townhouse hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Opening Spring 2022 and located in the heart of St. Andrew Square, Gleneagles Townhouse will be home to a 33-room hotel, bustling all-day restaurant The Spence and lively members’ club and rooftop bar Lamplighters, with extraordinary views over Edinburgh’s storied skyline.

Over the last five years, Ennismore Design Studio and their talented team of architects and designers have worked tirelessly to sensitively restore the Townhouse building, home previously to the British Linen Bank which later became the Bank of Scotland. Embracing the building’s heritage and listed building status, interiors marry timeless charm with all of today’s necessities in each of the hotel’s 33 rooms and suites. Each guestroom will be unique, individual in size, orientation and ceiling height – with star suites overlooking St. Andrew Square. The grandeur of the building’s beginnings has been reflected through the use of decorative mouldings and sweeping features such as canopy crown headboards. Throughout the Townhouse, original fireplaces and panelling have been reimagined with fresh colours whilst maintaining their authentic features. Modern artwork curated by local Scottish artists complements antique lighting, ornate cornicing, stone columns, ornamental gold details, original vaults and floor tiles. Noble nods have been made throughout to the building’s outstanding architectural features designed by notable architects and sculptors such as David Bryce, best known for perfecting Scottish baronial style.

The casual 120 cover all-day restaurant The Spence, headed up by one of Scotland’s most exciting young chefs, will be rooted in classics with a modern twist. Bloody Mary breakfasts, long, lazy lunch options and three-course dinners as well as some fun, naughty nightcaps will all feature on the produce-driven menu. Located in the centre of the old banking hall, the impressive social space references its previous life and incredible heritage with a central feature bar situated underneath an extraordinary glass domed ceiling, with original and elaborate features including gantry lighting. Open to everyone, this will be a place to gather and for great get-togethers to unfold. The roof terrace bar Lamplighters, with impressive views of the city’s medieval Old Town to the left and picture-perfect New Town to the right, has been heavily influenced by Gleneagles’ bountiful Scottish surrounds. Serving up a seasonally rotating, locally inspired list of cocktails, local whiskies, beers, spirits, and wine – it will be an exclusive spot to watch the sun set and see the city lights sparkle.

Down in the bank’s former vault, resident guests and members will have access to a dedicated training, treatments and therapies space. With curated experiences for holistic wellness and innovative technologies including a cryotherapy chamber and infrared sauna, the gym and wellness studios aim to enhance individual wellness journeys through movement, restoration, and recovery. Mornings at the Townhouse may mean serene starts in the yoga studio or dedicated time with a personal trainer. Or, for more reinvigorating options; swift city runs or simple studio spins in the gym. Following a workout, resident guests or members alike can retreat for a restorative treatment in one of two treatment rooms.

For locals, and those in the know, it’s the members’ club that’s set to stand this Townhouse apart. It will form a community with a passion for exchanging ideas, discovering new obsessions, collaborating, and simply having fun. The Members’ Lounge, the heart of the club home to all-day dining and a full-service bar, is a base for breakfast meetings, catch-up brunches and long, leisurely lunches. The Members’ Snug meanwhile is an office-away-from-the-office; a relaxing lounge space featuring a help-yourself pantry – ideal for catching up on emails and hosting informal meetings. But it is evenings at the Townhouse when the community really comes alive as friends and colleagues meet and enjoy live music and seasonal parties with plenty of chatter and laughter. For nights that require a slightly gentler pace – members can try an intimate wine tasting or settle in for one of the Townhouse’s insightful events. An escape to Gleneagles, an hour’s drive away, is also one of the benefits members can reap to get the best of both city and countryside life.

Beyond the doors, partnerships with local innovators from apparel designers to newly discovered drinks brands made in Edinburgh will look to bring members and the wider community together. In addition, the Townhouse will be working with friends at Social Bite, born in Edinburgh and now Scotland’s leading homeless charity, to support the most vulnerable communities in the city. All in all, Gleneagles Townhouse is on course to become a lively residence where a vibrant and positive community will gather to collaborate, give back, celebrate, discover, and explore.
