Glasgow Council has already received plans from hotelier Jim Mackie via his developers Core Associates.
Named after an iconic 1940's Corsetry business that occupied the premises and with its original signage still visible, the former Sugar Merchant's property celebrated its 200th birthday last year.
Hotelier Jim Mackie believes that the time is right for an upsurge in interest for this neglected part of the Merchant City. The increased footfall will add to the already established businesses such as Gin 71 and the nearby G1 Group Corinthian Club or the LGBT+ Polo Lounge.
The Grade A building is situated amongst other fine example of heritage and commerical architecture. Previous attempt to re-commercialise the street have been met with difficulty and restricted access for the disabled. The new hotel is planning full accessibility with wheelchair ramps, new lifts and stairs to ensure there is unrestriced access for all.
Core Associates said, "Acknowledging the significant and unique history of this building and the surrounding streets in this area of Glasgow, our client wishes to revitalise the building function and create a renewed interest in Virginia Street through development of a new destination here."
