Scotland’s sole professional basketball team has kicked off the new season on a high after partnering with Glasgow’s newest and freshest hotel brand, Radisson RED.

Pupils from Burgh Primary School in Rutherglen joined the Radisson RED Glasgow Rocks at the new hotel to meet the players and get a taster of a typical professional basketball team training session. The pupils each had the opportunity to shoot hoops with the players through and even made some post-training fresh fruit smoothies with Radisson RED’s head chef, Stephen Pohler.

The activity took place a few days before the Radisson RED Glasgow Rocks head down south to face the London Lions at their first game of the season this Friday (21st September).

As well as meeting the Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks team, the pupils also met the hotel’s famous four-legged resident, Baxter. The Boston terrier can usually be found roaming around the dog-friendly hotel in Finnieston, located near the SSE Hydro.

Vicky McCool, Head Teacher at Burgh Primary School said: “I’d like to say a special thanks to Radisson RED and Glasgow Rocks for inviting Burgh Primary School to the launch day. The pupils had a fantastic time meeting the Radisson RED Glasgow Rocks team. It’s not every day you get to shoot some hoops and drink smoothies with professional basketball players!

“Meeting the absolutely adorable Baxter was also a highlight, you can see why he is such a hit with hotel guests.”

Duncan Smillie, Co-Owner of Glasgow Rocks commentated: “Everyone on the team had a fantastic day, it was a great opportunity for the players to meet the Radisson RED team and take the primary pupils through their paces. Basketball is a brilliant way for young people to stay active and hopefully we have sparked an interest in some of the pupils to join our Rocks Juniors teams.”

Michael Weston, Curator at Radisson Red said: “We are delighted to officially join forces with Scotland’s only professional basketball team. The Rocks are an iconic team here in Glasgow so for us to have the opportunity to work with such a team is a real privilege.

“I never thought we’d have primary pupils, professional basketball players, and a Boston Terrior all taking part in a shootout at the hotel – the pupils certainly held their own and I can see some future Radisson RED Glasgow Rocks players amongst them.

The Radisson RED Glasgow Rocks have played home matches at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow since 2012. The Glasgow Rocks Juniors currently boast an U/14, U/16 and U/18 team and are always looking for enthusiastic kids to join the Rocks family.
